Pickaxes are equipment for deployed miners. The third-party play records describe a multiplier on the miner holding the tool.
Lanternfang and Gloomwing are official Update 5 names. The pickaxe and dig-deeper guides dated 15 October also contain shop prices and multiplier samples. I checked their text on 17 October; the samples below are third-party records, not a current shop inventory or a complete upgrade ladder.

Check the shop, then the holder
- Read the shop in the zone you have unlocked: compare the displayed cost, multiplier and stock with the tool you already own.
- After a purchase, use Equip Best at your plot. The official API confirms this feature is free; the old pass is retired.
- Check the equipped tool after replacing a miner. The third-party crew guide describes moving gear to the replacement; it does not say a swap destroys the pickaxe.
- Compare damage on the same rocks before and after the change. Keep the rest of the build fixed rather than attributing every gain to the tool.
- If a pickaxe animation sticks after Equip Best, Update 5 lists an animation fix. A missing animation alone does not establish a missing damage bonus.

It is gear for the anime miners on your plot. A recorded guide describes it as a multiplier on the miner who equips it.
How do I get Lanternfang?
The notes only say it is one of two new pickaxes in The Hallowkeep. The obtain method is not spelled out. I will not guess a quest.
